Mount Everest
Elsewhere I’ve noted that a trek to the base camp of Mount Everest was a personal goal for many years. (In October 2012 I made such a trek and it did not disappoint.) The peak was officially named in 1857 for a British Surveyor General of India (George Everest) but numerous other names for the highest mountain in the world exist such as Chomolungma – Mother Goddess of the World. The peak’s elevation is “officially” listed as 29,035 feet but some believe it is still growing at a rate of 2.4 inches per year. Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay first successfully climbed the mountain in May 1953. Since then numerous climbers have summit Everest but many also lost their lives. (Near the hospital in Pheriche there is a Memorial Sculpture naming most of the 200 climbers who have died on Mount Everest.) Clear morning skies for most of my trek allowed for breathtaking views of numerous majestic peaks, especially this spectacular mountain. Below are a few photos.
